History

In the early 1980s the Irex Corporation, one of the United States' leading commercial and industrial insulation and specialty contractors, recognized the need for an independent distribution company to address the challenges and opportunities for what was evolving to be a major component of the mechanical insulation industry: the inventory manager, the service specialist, the technical resource -- the DISTRIBUTOR.

This need was being fueled from several sources: the market entrance of large numbers of smaller contractors; the growth of the nonunion market segment; plant owners and general contractors' shift in focus from product distribution to manufacturing; and the economy.

In 1982, Irex founded Specialty Products & Insulation Co. (SPI) as a subsidiary to concentrate on the distribution segments of the mechanical, HVAC, industrial and commercial insulation industries. In late 1998, SPI separated from Irex and now operates as an independent company.

SPI's product lines (over 35,000 SKUs) include mechanical, industrial, commercial, building, metal building and HVAC insulation systems; OEM products; passive fire protection systems; architectural/acoustical ceiling, wall and flooring systems; and a wide range of specialty products.

With sales and service centers throughout the United States and in conjunction with domestic and international alliances, SPI serves a broad and diverse domestic and global customer base with quality products and services.
